Manchester United agree Bastian Schweinsteiger deal with Bayern Munich
Bayern chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge confirms midfielder will complete switch to Old Trafford as he seeks new challenge.
Louis van Gaal believes he is in pole position to make a double move for Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin to strengthen Manchester United’s midfield as he prepares for the summer tour of the US.
The club fly out on Monday to Seattle and the manager is racing against time to try to complete the deals for Bayern Munich’s Schweinsteiger and Southampton’s Schneiderlin.
In an official statement on United’s website, the club confirmed that they were “delighted to announce it has reached agreement with Bayern Munich to sign midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, subject to a medical and personal terms. A further announcement will be made when the process is complete.”
Bayern’s chief executive, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, also confirmed on Saturday that the club had reached an agreement with United to sell Schweinsteiger.
“Bastian wants to do something new at the end of his career,” said Rummenigge. “He asked that we meet his wishes. My colleagues at Manchester United have been in touch. We’ve reached an agreement over a transfer.
“It’s regrettable because Bastian meant a great deal to the club. He achieved great things. We say goodbye on great terms.”
